In Gun you take on the role of Colton White, a cowboy who’s been raised in the Wild West by a hunter that goes by the name of Ned who is actually voiced by Kris Kristofferson. The game begins with an in game cinematic where the steamboat that these two gunslingers are riding on gets ambushed and destroyed by an evil preacher and his cohorts. After he escapes the carnage, Colton seeks answers to why the ship was attacked and what the attackers were actually looking for. First stop in this tale takes you to Dodge City where your quest for revenge and justice begins.
The story is a decent one and involves quite a few twists. To advance the main adventure you take on story quests. In between story quests you can upgrade your stats and gain some cash by taking on a wide variety of side quests. The money you gain can then be used to buy things like weapon upgrades and a scalping knife from city vendors. Every time you complete a story quest a whole slew of side quests are unlocked. These side quests range from herding cattle to hunting down criminals on wanted posters. If you stick to the main story and never touch a side quest you might have some trouble with a couple boss battles and will complete the entire game in around seven hours. If you do all the side quests your stats will be so ridiculous that the game will seem like a pushover and you’ll complete the entire thing in around 12-15 hours.
The core of all the story missions and most of the side ones is third person run and gun action. Colton gets to acquire all kinds of weapons including six shooters, rifles, shotguns, bows, and dynamite. As you battle against the odds and take out large waves of enemies you’ll be able to regain health with a shot of whisky from your trusty flask, which can be refilled by finding whisky bottles. You’ll also be able to handle these large waves of enemies do to the fact that Colton is one heck of a marksman.
While you might expect lots of trick shooting in a game called Gun, the guys over at Neversoft saw too it that the gunplay is fast, plentiful, and varied. So much so that Colton can zoom in with most weapons, shoot from the backs of horses, hit enemies with a large range for aiming error, and even go into a Gun exclusive shooting mode called Quick Draw. In Quick Draw all the action slows down and you can cycle between enemies by flicking the left analog stick. Not only that, but enemies also take fewer shots to kill while in this matrixesque bullet time mode. Quick Draw does have a meter that limits your time spent within this special mode but it can be refilled by fighting enemies regularly.
