Wii Sports Review

Gamer gives it 72%

Baseball on the other hand is decent but not fully fleshed out. When pitching, the faster you motion, the faster the ball flies. Pitching styles are swapped through a menu and not by special gesturing, so there’s some potential fun lost there. On the batting side of things it’s a similar foray as the harder you swing the harder you hit the ball. On the minus side of things there’s unfortunately no base running or fielding, it’s just hit and pitch. It’s a fun game only limited by the range of motions required to succeed and the game of baseball in general.

How to play.

And last but certainly not least is golf which takes a ridiculous amount of skill to make things happen the way you want them to. You can alter the speed and direction to which you hit the ball by swinging the Wiimote but it’s so touchy and at times inaccurate that casuals are likely to never get past the first hole.

Strike!

Besides the individual titles, the other big feature is the inclusion of Mii’s. Make a custom character in your Wii and import it directly into the action. I think this has the potential to attract a lot of non-gamers and to add a lot of fun to Nintendo’s line of simple games that has been started with Wii Sports.

Heck of a pitch!

So in essence it’s a casual game that has the potential to turn non-gamers into gamers and open up a whole new market for Nintendo. For the hardcore there’s not much here that you’ll be playing for more than an hour other than the training mode which gives you a lot of challenges but ultimately falls flat. It’s a decent pack-in and a great intro to the Wii but I can’t help but feel envious of the Japanese who will have the option to buy the Wii without Wii Sports come December 2nd.

Pros
  • Great intro to the Wiimote and Mii’s
  • Easy to pickup
  • Great for non-gamer parties
Cons
  • Some of the games aren’t fleshed out enough
  • Boxing is a chore
  • No real depth to keep you coming back
  • Little Wiimote motion is required so you’ll eventually end up back on the couch
