Sound
Okay, even if you don’t like the graphics or gameplay of the game, it’s impossible to say you don’t like the sounds and music. Every gamer knows and has a place in his heart for the original Mario theme music. Some sounds like Mario’s jumping or coin collecting, or even the sound when you get an upgrade, are still heard in games nowadays. Plain and simple, the sound in this game is very fun too listen too. Sure, the sound quality is far from being impressive, but it’s pretty much the first NES game really, you can’t expect such high quality.

Port Quality
The port is very well done. No slow downs, no graphical glitches, easy to control with any controller, especially the Wii Remote because of its NES controller-like shape, basically everything in the game is the same as it was originally.

Conclusion
SMB is a classic. It’s still really fun to play, even if it’s over 20 years old (already? 0_o). Some people might feel it’s a bit too basic, and the controls aren’t exactly as well made as platformers that came out after it, but still if you take your time to “learn” the controls well, you won’t have any trouble with anything in it. The only “bad” thing about it is that the graphics aren’t really up to par with what the NES can do. If you compare SMB to games released later like SMB3, you might find it a bit weird that SMB isn’t that nice graphically compared to those. But I guess every series has to start somewhere, right?

Pros
  • After all these years, it's still fun to play
  • Set standards for all side-scrolling games to come
  • Simplistic enough that anyone can easily be good at it
  • Still fun to try and speed run
  • Has the nice sounds you know and love
Cons
  • Graphics could have been much better (considering games that came out near the same time looked better)
  • Some people may find it a bit TOO simplistic for their taste
  • Not much of a challenge other than the last world
  • Bowser is still too easy to beat
