WarioWare: Smooth Moves Review

Gamer gives it 86%

Ok so that’s how things play out in game, but what about the actual micro-games themselves? How do they hold up? Fortunately they play and work flawlessly with the Wiimote. They can be as simple as picking up the Wiimote from the ground at the right time or as difficult as steering a SNES version of the Starfox plane through an actual Starfox level. My favorite example of the first is a micro-game that shows a phone and when it starts to ring you’re supposed to pick up the Wiimote. When you do this correctly, you’ll instinctively put the Wiimote up to your ear only to hear an actual voice coming through the Wiimote speaker saying hello to you. This kind of polish is really what sets this one apart from the rest.

My first steps into Wario Ware.

The graphics of Wario Ware Smooth Moves are also of higher quality than before. From the 2D cinematics of the character worlds, to the wide-ranging in-game micro-game graphics, everything looks stellar. Some of the micro-games even exude next-gen quality graphics if only in a 3D face or a background. You’ll also get a taste of Nintendo graphics of the past with classic micro-games which actually put you inside the likes of Zelda: Wind Waker, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and even a 3D version of Balloon Fight. The sound effects and background music are also spot-on and always feel right in the given situation.

Turtles gone wild.

Though, with all the greatness that this title offers there is the fact that the game is extremely short. It will take you around two hours to beat it the first time through and another couple to unlock everything. There’s also the fact that you can’t use your own Mii in the game and I find that really puzzling. Especially seeing as when you create a new save game, you select an avatar that looks just like a Mii.

Some pretty cool mini-games are included.

Minor gripes aside, this is a great game with a lot of innovation and fun to be had.

Pros
Excellent rental
Great innovative micro-games
Incredibly varied and cool use of the Wiimote
Beautiful graphics all around
Fun extra mini-games

Cons
It’s short, like always
