Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Review

(Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for Playstation 2)

Some people might be reluctant to buy this game on the Nintendo Wii because a version (which costs less) is already available on the PS2. Well I must say that even at the slightly higher price, the Wii version is more than worth it. Although basically the contents of both versions are exactly the same, you have a completely new control scheme that can only be experienced with the Wii’s unique controller set-up. Here are my thoughts on what is probably the best Dragon Ball game ever.

Graphics
That’s one of the deceiving parts of the game. Although it’s on a more powerful system than the PS2, the graphics are exactly the same as the PS2 version. Not that they look bad or anything, it’s just that I would expect the Wii version to look better, even if it would have been just slightly. The graphics are cel-shaded, and the characters all look exactly like they do in the anime. The attacks and character movements are also masterfully done, looking once again exactly like in the anime. So basically, the game is eye-candy to fans of the anime, but non-fans won’t really find much to look at that they’ll find impressive in any way in this game.

Sound
The sounds all come from the anime. The weird teleporting sound, the sound of the kamehameha beam charging, the sound when smashing an opponent to the ground… every sound is exactly the same as in the anime. The character voices in the story mode also all seem to be the same as in the anime. If they aren’t voiced by the same person, they still sound exactly the same. Other than that the music isn’t too bad, although nothing special. All-in-all the sound is ear-candy to DBZ fans, but it’s normal to other people.
