Untold Legends 2 is an odd game. On the surface it has a lot going for itself but the sum of all its parts doesn’t add up to the polished end product you might expect. The character customization is extremely deep and yet the online player vs. player component doesn’t make leveling and gearing up all that worthwhile. The game has serious depth and potential as an MMORPG but that’s not what the game is.
The gameplay of Untold Legends 2 revolves around killing hordes of enemies with your primary weapon, your ranged weapon, and through special attacks. I found ranged to be mostly ineffective unless you were doing team PvP so I opted to use the main weapon of my character most of the time. You can do a basic slash with the x button, hold it down for a power up attack, and at times you are prompted to hold down the square button for an extra attack. While I did use the power up and extra attack from time to time I found them both to be mostly useless and that I ended up mashing x the majority of the time. If you want to get tricky and use some neat tactics you can but it’s not forced in any way.
Besides regular attacks you can use class specific special attacks that you unlock as you level. Every few levels you can train a new skill and every level you get a point to put in to a skill. If you like a certain skill you can dump more points into it to make it more powerful. Like many RPGs, some of the skills are complete crap and some are essential so you’ll want to be cautious when picking skills to train. Thankfully unlike ranged attacks and regular special attacks, these level locked specials are extremely useful. Some enhance your damage, some stun an area of enemies, and some even shoot out projectiles. Add on the fact that each class has a ton of specials to unlock and you’ve got a reason to level and grind away at monsters long after you’ve completed the main campaign.
When you first start a game you’ll be treated to a great character customization process where you can change your warrior’s appearance and choose your class. There are several classes available and most of them are fresh derivatives of older RPG classes. Not only that, but each can morph into an animal form for a short period of time. Each morph has different abilities and you can only morph once your morph meter is filled by killing lots of enemies. Unfortunately this feature falls by the wayside like ranged attacks as it takes forever to power up and the duration is extremely short. I only bothered when I was in a jam and even then it didn’t help all that much.
