Spectral Vs. Generation is a 2D fighting game based on Idea's Spectral Force and Generation of Chaos strategy/RPG series. Developed by IGS and originally released in arcades least year, the game was also released for the Playstation 2 in April, before being ported to the PSP. As a port, Spectral Vs. Generation has been converted quite well from the Playstation 2 version. Nothing has been changed, although nothing was added, either. After the game's initial load, all of the in-game load time is very fast; Spectral Vs. Generation is easily the fastest-loading fighter on the PSP. The game offers the standard set of fighting game options and modes, including arcade, versus, practice, and survival.
Being based on strategy/RPG games, Spectral Vs. Generation is set in a medievil fantasy setting, which is somewhat rare for 2D fighting games. The character designs are mostly typical Japanese strategy/RPG-style swordsman and magic users; everything from the genre, including pointy eared elves, mysterious swordsmen with large weapons, miniskirt-clad maidens, and more are present. There is also one unplayable boss character, a more powerful version of the winged character "Earth."
Spectral Vs. Generation's game play is quite solid. Although there are only 12 characters in the game, each has a good number of special and super attacks, and play differently from each other. The game also offers a number of techniques, including grappling, countering/dodging (known as "Chaos Breaking"), air chain combo attacks, time freezing (slows down the enemy while you move at normal speed during certain attacks), roll recoveries, and a version of super cancelling, in which you can perform a super attack instead of finishing certain multi-hit attacks. While there's definitely plenty of game play in Spectral Vs. Generation, it doesn't feel as deep as what the competition offers.
