Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure Review

Bebpo gives it 85%

Level designs in the game are a fairly good mix of puzzles and action. Usually each location features nice looking rooms (especially impressive for the PSP), and fun fights/platforming to go with them. Levels tend to take about ten to twenty minutes and players are ranked on how well and fast they get through them. Ranking high on levels earns gold medals that can then be used to purchase useful accessories.

Speaking of accessories, in one of the best aspects of Gurumin, all equipment is physically shown on the character when equipped. Whether she equips goggles, costumes, or flaming attachments to her drill, everything shows up and looks great. New to the PSP version are several costumes that can be found to give some spice to the games visuals.

Graphically, Gurumin is an excellent looking game. Unlike many PSP games that look closer to PlayStation titles than PS2 titles, being a PC game Gurumin doesn’t really look like either, but rather it looks ultra-clean, colorful, and very modern. The game runs at 30fps, though NPCs and enemies tend to animate at about 1/4th that framerate, giving them an odd stop-motion animation look that seems to have been done on purpose.

Sound-wise, Gurumin features full voice-acting that sounds great and a really goofy, yet good, musical score that fits the subject matter appropriately. Through the PSP speakers Gurumin might not sound all that impressive, but through headphones, Gurumin is a please to listen to at all times.

Control in the game is mainly fine, though it definitely feels like a PC title in that it could have used more buttons. Players will often find themselves running around holding the circle button to charge attacks while dodging with the square button, jumping with the X button, and rotating the camera with the L & R buttons. This is mainly frustrating on bosses, where dodging and camera-turning become essential. During levels the controls tend to be ok.
