Next after the pilot is created, the player can choose from a mobile suit they wish to pilot. As the player advances through the missions in the single player campaign they will accumulate points that can be used to customize the various statistics of their mobile suit. These statistics range from weapon accuracy, radar efficiency, to movement speed.
The whole customization of the mobile suits stats is a great part of the game, since you are unable to fully max out every single category much careful planning must be done to ensure you have your settings to maximize your own piloting style.
The single player campaign consist of various branching missions, also during the missions your objectives can change in the middle, depending on how well you are doing in the mission itself. Missions are varied in objectives, from simple search and destroy, to more interesting ones like picking up lost cargo and bringing it back to the supply ship while fending off attackers. Overall the missions are very well done and the variety should keep players from getting bored. The stage design is very well done and you will be fighting on many different types of terrain from hot deserts, dense jungles, to underground facilities. Depending on the rank you obtain from the mission you will be rewarded with new mobile suits or pilots. So try to aim for the S ranks! Also to add to replay value, the mission branches are closed off once you select one. This is great if you wish to play through the game with a new type or non new type pilot, depending on which you created first.
The controls are very well done, at first it might be a little odd with movement being done with the directional keys rather than the analogue, but this was to combat players from breaking their analogue sticks by having to double tap to dodge and boost. The music, and sounds are taken exactly from the anime itself, and are very well done. Also all the special characters have their original voices used in the game adding to the atmosphere. As for the mobile suit animations, they are very well done and varied. Plus all the movements done by the various mobile suits keep true to the anime itself, which is sure to please the hard core fans of the Gundam universe.
If the excellent single player campaign was not enough for some of you, Bandai/Namco has gone the one step ahead and put in a 4 player VS mode and a Co-Op mode for those of you who would rather play with friends than go against them! In VS mode you can play the standard free for all, 2 Vs 2, or if you want to test out your New Type abilities against your friends fire up the 1 Vs 3 mode!
One of the other interesting modes is the Ad hoc mobile armor mode. Team up with a friend and defeat the giant mobile armor! A Gundam and GM Command takes on the massive Big Zam! Last is Co-op mode where the player and a friend can play together in missions cleared in single player mode. Finally a Gundam game with Co-op play!
Over all I think that Gundam Battle Royale is an excellent game for the PSP and seriously is worth picking up if you are a gundam fan. Once again I must stress that this quite possibly is the best gundam game so far in the series, and should make an excellent addition to anyones library. The controls are very easy to learn and should be a breeze for even the less experienced players. For the price this is one game you can`t go wrong with!
