Daxter Review

Gamer gives it 91%

After years of being Jak’s sidekick in Naughty Dog’s Jak & Daxter series, Daxter finally gets the chance to bust out on his own. Jak has been captured and its Daxter’s mission to get him back in one piece, at least once he remembers to. In the mean time he accidentally gets a job as an exterminator while boasting about his skills in Haven’s local pub. This odd story twist sets up a good 10 hours of platforming action that would be welcome on any console, let alone a portable one.

When the initial cinematics are over with you’re given an electric flyswatter and your first job. When exiting the exterminator’s shop for the first time you’ll be amazed at what Ready At Dawn has been able to pull off on the PSP. The city of Haven is bristling with life in the form of speeding air cars and vast environments that go off deep into the distance. It’s literally on par with what they have been able to achieve on the PS2.

With swatter in hand you jump on your floating moped and head off towards the icon on the mini-map. As you tear through the city to your destination the animation will slow a bit when there are lots of things in view but the surprising thing is that the control never falters. Animation may slow a bit and your speed may seem like it decreases, but everything else always exhibits perfect response. Once at the job location you jump off your bike and head into a building.

Most missions you get throughout the game will have you repeating this process. Once inside the building you’ll also usually find some sort of warp portal that takes you to your job location. These levels always have a person in distress that needs their property to be rid of a certain kind of pest. So you either kill so many of a special bug, kill several regular bugs to collect a certain number gold egg things, or you take on a big boss.
