Ape Escape Academy 2 Review

Gamer gives it 84%

The whole beefed up rock, paper, and scissors aspect makes the game all kinds of fun but then you add in collecting cards and extremely silly mini-games with monkeys and you’ve got a real winner. When it comes out in the US in late 2006 critics will be singing the praises I’m singing now, I’m sure of it.

The multiplayer modes include two players on one PSP, local WiFi of up to four players, and special two player local WiFi. While this is a nice addition I don’t see it as being that fun. Sure you get a better opponent with better AI but it still amounts to the same thing you play a million times in single player mode. I wasn’t able to test out all the WiFi options available so I can’t give a completely fair assessment of its capabilities but from what I’ve read about it I hope the developers improve it and take it online in part 3 of the series.

Import Friendly

While all the menus, the in game text, and everything else are in Japanese it’s not that big of a barrier for non-speakers. If you read through this review you’ll understand enough of the mechanics to be able to play through the entire game and collect every single card. If it sounds like a lot of fun to you I would recommend importing it since it won’t come out in the US until late 2006.

Pros
  • Addictive card collecting
  • Fun mini-games
  • Well constructed single player game
  • Fast loading
Cons
  • Weak multiplayer and no online play
