In the rather large and varied library of PSP games, I have come across a rather unusual sleeper of a title. Its an Action RPG made by Marvelous Interactive called Valhalla Knights.
PSP Japanese Box Art of Valhalla Knights
For those of you who may not be too familiar with the company Marvelous Interactive, they would be the most famous for their farming series Harvest Moon. In America their games are released by the publisher Natsume. Marvelous Interactive also does a lot of anime related game titles, such as Negima and BECK for example. Anyways back to the review.
Valhalla Knights is a rather interesting blend of old school RPG dungeon crawling, with a rather interesting mix of action team based combat. The story on the other hand is the standard RPG story, so there isn’t exactly too much to talk about there. The graphics are not too bad either, its not the highest of quality but its not the lowest either. Id say its in the rather fair grounds and should meet most gamers standards of graphics quality expectations.
Battle!
One of the more fun features of the game is the fact that all armor except for accessories is visible on your character. So being able to customize your character with armor styles that you like might keep you busy for quite some time, as you search for the different types of armors that are dropped from the many monsters in the game. The same goes for the weapons. Also it seems the developers had this in mind, since there are armors and weapons that have the exact same stats as others, just that they look different.
There is a Co-op play mode, but I personally have not had the chance to try it out yet myself.
Dibs on the chest!
The game consists of 5 races available to the player to use for his party, and 9 classes. The 5 races are Human, Elf, Dwarf, Hobbit, and Machine. The humans, elves, and hobbits all pretty much look like your standard cookie cutter designs, but the dwarf resembles Native Americans instead of the short, bearded, foul mouthed cans of whoop-ass we are used to. The machine race is a child sized cyborg that rides in a mechanized suit. This race is available later on in the game, and is unable to be created from the start of the game. Also the machine race is the only race able to use the “machine” class, and is unable to use any other class.
