Ever since the first screens of Untold Legends were shown it’s been kind of a joke. The visuals have been less than impressive and more often than not the screens released have featured some guy holding a box for no apparent reason. Box Guy aside, Sony Online Entertainment has done a half-hearted job moving their Action RPG series over to the Playstation 3, and it’s really hard to recommend it.
"The Ultimate Next-Gen Action RPG." Umm... No.
The first thing that you’ll unfortunately notice is that load times are just as bad as they were on the PSP, especially when you transition to new levels. Once you’re finally in-game you’ll be witness to some of the worst collision detection this side of Sonic the Hedgehog. You can literally be stuck in anything in the environment. Add on the fact that the action will completely freeze for a few seconds at times during normal gameplay and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.
More action than RPG if you ask me.
On the graphics end of things it doesn’t get much better. You’ll be walking along with nothing in sight and a huge horde will appear out of nowhere surrounding you. Untold Legends truly takes graphical pop-in to a whole new degree. Once you can see and attack the enemies the camera is likely to screw you over as well. It will bounce in and out constantly and get stuck on most anything you run into. So in the worst case you’ll run into a room, have a ton of enemies appear, the camera will get stuck on something and zoom in uncontrollably, and things will turn into a slideshow. Set off a special attack or spell that generates particle effects and things will slowdown to a crawl again. The bugs in this game are so horrendous that unlucky souls who purchase it will likely be trying to return it after just a few minutes of play.
Whoa there, tone things down so I can play!
Still interested? Well ok, let’s take a look at what makes Untold Legends tick when you can actually control the action. You’ll have your choice between one of three characters when you initially start your adventure. You can be a Scout, a Warrior, or a Mage. Each one has special attributes and abilities that ultimately boil down to mashing the x and square button. You’ll gain tons of experience which can then be used to upgrade your attacks but I doubt you’ll use any of the later ones consistently since it’s so easy to get through the game by just mashing. That’s right, no matter which character you pick it’s x square for life.
