Sonic the Hedgehog Review

(Sonic the Hedgehog for Wii) (Sonic the Hedgehog for XBOX 360)
Gamer gives it 12%

Core action stages aside, Sonic the Hedgehog has taken the story element of previous games to the level of Final Fantasy and near Xenosaga proportions. Not only are the voices horrible, as is the case for most Sonic games, but the story makes very little sense. Its like if you took any basic Nintendo story like Mario saving the Princess, lengthened it to several hours long, and filled it with mindless details that make no logical sense at all. In between these beautifully rendered cutscenes youll also be doing a lot of FedEx missions. These missions, made popular by old school RPGs and MMORPGs, where youll be tasked with finding random people who then say random things so that you can find another random person to say even more random things are awful. Why couldnt Sega have just stuck to the formula of the original Sonic Adventure and updated it?

Excessive CG reigns.

For some sick reason Shadow is also back and youll not only be using his guns once again but youll be helping him drive vehicles. Why does a Sonic game need several different kinds of vehicles? More importantly, why does it need vehicles with horrible control and some of the worst collision detection seen in a released game? Youll also be playing as a new guy named Silver who has some neat abilities that get old quickly. Hopefully Silver and Shadow elope to a state where gay hedgehog marriage is legal and we never see them again. Of course youll also be playing as all the old favorites but theyre really not worth mentioning.

Some decent action.

On the graphical side of things, the next-gen update isnt that great. The models have more polygons and the textures are higher resolution but the effects look nearly the same. The sound is also just as annoying with the return of ear shattering voice acting.

While a small group of stages are expertly crafted, the whole of the game is not worth the price of admission.

Pros
  • A couple memorable stages
Cons
  • Same broken gameplay and camera
  • Way too many story elements
  • Way too much talking to characters RPG style
  • Barely updated graphics
