Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM Review

(Dynasty Warriors: GUNDAM for XBOX 360)

When you’re in the field the graphics that really stand out are the Mech models. They all look incredibly good and animate so smoothly it’s unreal. Slashing through tons of Mechs is incredibly fluid and the animation interaction looks amazing. On the down side of things environments look last-generation for the most part. Terrain has washed out textures, the tiny roads and buildings look very basic and destroying them looks awful. When you’re in space you’re essentially on regular terrain, it’s just not visible. Because of this all you see are skybox space backgrounds that have textures that don’t lineup in some places. Luckily you’re almost always focused on the Mechs, but if you happen to look around at your surroundings you’d think it was a PS2 game.

Cutscenes a-plenty.

The sound is also quite mixed. While there are a ton of voiceovers that sound great, the music leaves a lot to be desired. You’ll hear the same lofty Gundam anthem in the background of most missions and it gets old really fast. Sound effects are fine for the most part, as are the in-game cutscene conversations.

Check out what you've unlocked.

Gundam Musou is a fun game for about 4-5 hours. After that it’s only for the fans of Musou and Gundam. If you’re hardcore about it you’ll easily get 60+ hours of gameplay although you might lose a few brain cells along the way.

Import Friendly?

The Playstation 3 is region free! This will play on any Playstation 3! That being said, the menus are all in English but the item and skill names and descriptions aren’t. Also all dialogue is in Japanese in both text and voice. It’s a Musou game though so you’ll be fine unless you want to know the story.

Pros
  • Tons of pilots and Mechs to unlock and play with
  • 60+ hours of gameplay if you can stand it
  • Great looking Mechs
  • Co-op in all missions!
  • Mildly entertaining 2 player VS
Cons
  • Last-generation environments
  • Very repetitive gameplay
  • Playing through one pilot’s story was more than enough for me and that took 5 hours
  • No online
  • Frustrating boss battles and mission requirements at times
  • The pilot based mission structure feels odd
