95% of the time the game is extremely easy. But then you’ll reach a point in a mission where either an insanely tough boss appears or you have to keep an idiot General alive and things go haywire. It’s insanely annoying to get to the end of a mission after 30 minutes of gameplay only to be raped by the final boss. It’s not even funny how tough some of these bosses are, and it’s not that they have rough tactics, it’s that they have insane amounts of health.
A bit of space action.
When you do manage to complete a mission you’ll be given lots and lots of extra experience which then levels up your pilot and your Mech. Generals and guards within missions drop items from which you can select one at the end of a mission, if you win. There are a ton of items to collect and three of these can be equipped to your Mech to augment its base stats. You’ll also occasionally unlock skills which you can equip which augment your Mech’s appearance and attacks. What’s somewhat annoying is that these skills and items have to be unlocked for every single pilot. Between this and the mission overlap, there’s way to much reuse going on in this game.
As for actually fighting, there’s a simple combo structure as well as boosting, guarding, and SP attacks to play around with. When you slash through the mindless Mechs in the field you gain SP. When your SP meter fills up you can unleash a special attack which is unique to your current Mech. When your Mech levels up you’ll eventually gain 2 and then 3 stages of your SP meter which can be filled to execute extra stages of your special attack. My first pilot, when filled to stage 3, would attack with two light sabers, then do a huge light blast, would then fire off some rockets, and finally would shoot off an insanely huge laser. These kinds of massive attacks are the easiest way to take down guards and Generals.
Fists, light sabers, and whips are the melee weapons of choice.
You also have a gun which I found to be mostly useless on most Mechs. You can also boost upward in a jump like fashion, boost on the ground, and even turn into a flying Mech by jump boosting and then regular boosting. It doesn’t work on all Mechs but for some you can use this flying mode to quickly move around the map. You can also pick up power-ups in the field which will augment your speed, attack power, or defense power for 30 seconds.
