24: The Game Review

Gamer gives it 59%

Being a huge fan of at least seasons one and two of 24 I was seriously hyped to get my hands on this game. Little did I know that it would turn out to be one of the biggest stinkers in 24’s history this side of the fourth season. If you’re a huge fan of the TV series it might be worth a gander but those looking for solely a solid action game will want their money back.

The story of 24: The Game is arguably just as good as any of the seasons thus far. There are murders, tons of action, cliffhangers, terrorists, and everything else the series is known for. If you’re at all curious at what happened between seasons two and three then this is the only place you’re going to find out about it. I won’t get into it too much here so that I won’t spoil it for the fans that are destined to pick up this title, but all in all it is a solid story with a few holes here and there.

That being said, the presentation through cutscenes is absolutely superb. The camera work is spot on, the multi-angle shots make many appearances, and the character models really look strikingly good. Every time you hit a cutscene you will feel like you’re back in an episode of the show. This aspect of the game is truly a great feat for the Sony developers.

Along with the visual side of the scene delivery is the spot on voiceovers done by the actual cast. Everything sounds great and authentic except for those few times when it feels like a Star Wars prequel moment. You know, when the acting feels really terrible because they’re acting off of absolutely nothing at all. Jack leads the pack in line flubs by delivering several intense lines in a matter of fact kind of way. I don’t think the actors can be blamed for this at all and it doesn’t detract all that much from the cutscenes but it is noticeable.

When the elaborate scenes aren’t playing you’ll be deep in the action as Jack Bauer for better or worse. Your main aiming and viewing tool is the camera control which is completely borked. Too many times you’ll have the camera facing one way, hit the aim button, and then have the camera do a knee jerk 180 turn to accommodate. This happens so often that it made me nearly nauseous after a few hours of play.
