Hideo Kojima has been renowned as a game creator for his “Metal Gear Solid” series. One of his less known creations is the Zone of the Enders games on the Playstation 2. It is an action game series where you take control of a mecha called Jehuty. Here are my thoughts on this game.
Story
Portraying a world of the future where people control robots known as Orbital Frames for combat, as well as technology enabling humans to live in space in huge space centers known as colonies, Zone of the Enders has a good science-fiction story. A group named BAHRAM attacks the space colony Antillia, which is based around Jupiter, with the goal of finding the two strongest Orbital Frames ever: Jehuty and Anubis. During the attack, a young boy named Leo almost gets killed, but gets away and is able to go aboard the Orbital Frame Jehuty to save himself. Then he is asked by the UNSF to bring Jehuty back to Mars. Because of the attack Leo must do many tasks and defeat a bunch of enemies to escape Antillia. So the story isn't too bad, although it's slightly clichéd.
Graphics
The mechas look great. Designed by Yoji Shinkawa, the same person who designed the characters and mechs in the Metal Gear Solid series, each Orbital Frame in the game looks unique. The city models are pretty basic, but most of the time the cities will end up completely destroyed, so it’s not too bad. The special effects are also pretty cool. May it be energy beams, explosions, buildings crumbling, everything looks really good. The only big problem here is the slight lack of enemy variety. Other than the bosses, there are only 3 different types of enemies, and 2 of them look kind of similar. During cinematics, the characters looks okay, but not really that good compared to other games that have come out this generation, but most of the time you’ll only see Orbital Frames during cut scenes. All in all the graphics aren’t bad. Not exactly the best this generation, but pretty good for the time.
