Playing the original Wild Arms for the PSX, the game apparently in many eyes hasn’t aged very well and is a pain to play. This is true in many ways, the game had a great story and a great cast yet could benefit greatly from the improvements added in subsequent Wild Arms. But is this remake of a classic really warranted considering how graceful the original was? It may be difficult to tell at first with the mild graphics but the game is so different from the original that it isn’t Wild Arms 1 anymore but a rethinking of the original.
Despite the dismay of SCEA, Alter Code: F has been successfully localized and brought over to the US market. The story in the original Wild Arms followed three very distinctive heroes on their journey to heal the world of Filgaia. In prior events, Demons and Humans had a huge war several thousand years before and the humans made great sacrifices to protect their world. In present-day the demons have been extinct for eons yet it is in the will of a certain group to bring back the Mother of all demons, Mother. The game’s plot is a very deep one with several conflicts occurring, one after another. What’s amazing is that the developers have actually extended the story with other chapters and added more character development. Still Rudy plays the silent character and only Jack and Cecilia can talk. The plot for the game surprisingly follows the original very loosely but still keeps in align with the traditional story of three heroes banding together to save a dying world. Talk about repetition, if you are looking for a completely brand-new storyline then you better look elsewhere.
