The inevitable return to the land of Filgaia. Wild Arms 3 takes place in the far distant future compared to the other Wild Arms. The setting is about a thousand years after the first, the whole planet is on the verge of death with desert sprawling across the entire surface. The planet has literally turned into a giant Wild West showdown. As expected in a Wild West setting, crime is a common sight with most of the slack set on a genre of people called “drifters.” Believe me, seeing Filgaia in a suffering fate is a very disheartening one especially if you take into account of the events prior to save the planet. But Wild Arms will always be Wild Arms, an RPG with its roots inside a Wild West atmosphere. The setting is best seen as an RPG set in a Trigun setting. We have the traditional Wild West clashing with some form of new-age science fiction conflict. But if anything is an indication it’s Horses + Guns = Winner.
Examining Wild Arm 3’s plot, the plot isn’t a very complex one and swaggers a bit on the cliché side. The game starts off in a very typical Wild West plot as the four heroes of the game all collide on an attempt to rob a train. From there you meet up with one of the main villains, Janus and his comrades. Within hours the Wild West plot suddenly takes a turn and moves into the more familiar grounds of the sci-fi and magic-based plots. Generally the plot structure of the game isn’t very developed and I would have liked more dialogue between the characters. But why complain? I’ve always wanted to experience an RPG in a Trigun setting, and Wild Arms 3 is damn close. Something I thought was felt mentioning was that EVERY character in the game has a name, including NPC. Talk about effort on the developer’s part. But for what it is, the game takes the best elements from the series and gives it more focus, I’m talking about the awesome dungeon and puzzle solving.
