Devil May Cry Review

(Devil May Cry for PSP)
Jobocan gives it 94%

The original version of Devil May Cry 3 was released almost a year ago. It got rave reviews from just about everyone. After the crap-tastic Devil May Cry 2, many people were reluctant of buying this one, but very few people were disappointed. Now Capcom decided to re-release the game, but this time with many added features. Does the new features warrant buying the game again ? Here’s my thoughts on it.

Graphics
The game looks really nice for a PS2 game. The in-game character models look great, the monsters are varied and really look evil, the bosses are highly detailed and sometimes a bit scary-looking.
Other than that, the cinematics are pretty good quality as well. There’s better cinematics in other games on the PS2, but still those are pretty nice and they really help in the advancing of the story as there are at least 2 cinematics per mission. They are never really long, so they don’t hinder the gameplay very much.
All-in-all the graphics in this game are very good, some of the best the PS2 has to offer.

Gameplay
The gameplay from Devil May Cry 3 was unchanged. Basically this game has the best gameplay I’ve experienced in an action game. Fast-paced, non-stop, stylish and just plain crazy, you will never be bored from the gameplay in this game. This time around, you can switch weapons on the fly wether it be guns or melee weapons, compared to DMC1 where you had to go throught the menu every time. This enables for smooth change of weapons which doesn’t hinder gameplay at all.

There are quite a few different things to talk about here. First, the styles. Dante starts with 4 styles, and unlocks 2 new styles as you advance through the game. Each style gives you different moves using the Circle button. Gunslinger makes your guns faster and stronger, as well as giving cool moves depending on the gun you are currently welding. Swordmaster gives you a bunch of stylish melee moves, 3 different new moves when you style is maxed-up. Royal guard enables you to block attacks. As you block attacks, you raise a kind of energy bar, which you can use to unleash a big attack against your opponent. Finally, Trickster is a great style for evading attacks and moving around faster. You get dashes which make you invincible, air dashes, and a teleport move. The styles enables each player to play differently. It gives really varied gameplay.

When you destroy an enemy, he drops Red Orbs. Those red orbs are used to buy upgrades for your character : New moves for each weapon, power-ups for your guns and buy many items for healing, Devil Trigger Runes replenishing, life bar increasing, extra Devil Trigger Runes and Yellow or Gold orbs(depending which you chose).

Now the Devil Trigger mode. After a certain mission in the game(when you use Dante, Vergil can do it anytime), you get the power to tap into your devil powers. It makes you faster stronger and depending on the weapon you are using a different stat. It’s a bit deceiving comapred to the original DMC Devil Trigger, since the DT in this game does not feature new movesets and DT exclusive moves, while it was the case in the original DMC. But it’s still pretty useful for the extra power and speed.
