Sonic where have you been? I’ve missed you for so long and now you’re back and I don’t know how to feel. I mean my Sonic Adventure nostalgia can only last so long right? Anyways, it’s good to have you back in decent form but I’ll be watching you so don’t try to pull a “next-gen” on me again! Ok with the shock and awe of a decent Sonic game out of the way, let it be known that this isn’t the best Sonic game ever made and it’s not a perfect game either. It’s just a breath of fresh air and a stellar new entry into the Wii’s growing library.
3.. 2.. 1..
As you take hold of the Wiimote horizontally you’ll be able to steer the Sega icon left and right by tilting. Locking on to enemies and then whipping the Wiimote forward lets you do your basic and most used attack. While things take a while to get used to in the controls department, they soon start to feel very good and allow you to enjoy Sonic’s first on-rails adventure. The real treat is when you master the controls and start racing through the levels at mach speed while completing main and side goals as the environments wiz by you as if you’re actually piloting a jet plane.
And what’s truly incredible about these environments and everything contained within them is that they look amazing. After so many years of Sonic games looking nearly identical to their first Dreamcast brethren Sonic and the Secret Rings finally ups the ante. This is truly the first Wii game to eclipse the Gamecube in visuals and prove that the Wii is not just a GC with a fancy controller. The lighting always looks incredible as do the extremely detailed environments that you see so much and so little of while playing.
But while the game plays extremely well in the single player affair, there has to be something said about the audio. There is some insanely annoying vocal work going on in every single level of the game as well as some horrible choices in the soundtrack department. Add on the fact that the multiplayer is tacked on and not worth a second of your time and this isn’t a perfect package. Many of the multiplayer games don’t even function correctly and just leave you feeling cheated. That being said, if you can handle the audio and don’t give a damn about the multiplayer this game will not disappoint.
