Wii sports brings to mind one of Nintendo’s first pack-ins by the name of World Class Track Meet, which was fun in concept and for maybe an hour after you first got home with your brand new console. Though after just a few hours of play, things got old and that fancy mat that came with it ended up tucked away in the corner only to be brought out to show off to the occasional curious visitor. That being said, Wii Sports is an enjoyable introduction to your Wiimote, just don’t be expecting any depth or longevity.
Remeber this?
In our recent Miyamoto interview translation, Mario’s creator divulged that he thought that Wii Sports Tennis had the potential to be as popular, if not more than, the stocky plumber. While that may be overstating things, Wii Sports Tennis is definitely the best of all the Wii Sports five included titles. It has the potential to be a centerpiece at parties as up to four players can whack a ball around the court. Unfortunately there is no singles play though, and all it takes to play is to swing the Wiimote wildly when the ball approaches you. Though if you want to be the best you’ll have to learn to lob, smash, and time your hits perfectly. It’s simple, it’s evolved pong, and it’s incredible fun with a group of people. Here’s hoping Nintendo builds in a tournament system next time around.
The star of the show.
On the other end of the spectrum is Boxing which is incredibly hard to play. The controller is very unresponsive and makes dodging and hitting difficult if not impossible at times. Though, if you want something that uses both the Nun-chuck and the Wiimote this is your only choice in the bundle.
Serve that ball!
Bowling is another close contender for best title of the group as there’s a lot of motion involved and it all translates quite well onto the screen. Doing the exact same bowling motions that you would do at your local lane is required and skill is actually a factor. You can even spin your ball in hopes of sliding it from the edge of the lane back to the center for a strike. It’s a great competition game and one of the first Wii games to require you to actually be standing.
