The Zelda series on the whole sets a high standard for itself and video games in general. Through its lengthy history one Link adventure after the other has essentially set the standard for which the next must overcome. In comes Twilight Princess which has probably been delayed as much as Zelda titles of the past but certainly eclipses all other titles released to date in nearly every way. Think Ocarina of Time with a developed story, Wii controls, realistic graphics, increased length, better level design, and an overall better gaming experience and youll start to understand why Twilight Princess is the best Zelda title ever made.
You star off as a... goat herder.
One of the things that made me literally hate Wind Waker was when you got about of the way through the game and the action completely stopped. All that was left was sailing around the damn ocean for hours on end looking for random stuff in the sea. This was a huge departure from the series and Im glad to report that this kind of tacked on exploration is non-existent in Twilight Princess. In fact there is practically no back-tracking of any kind in the game, which is a feat to behold in these modern gaming days of, beat this dungeon 10 different ways for the sake of pushing length and so-called replayability.
You can attack... from Epona!
Another concern some veterans might have is that it was built for a Gamecube controller and was quickly ported to the Wiimote. Well you can take a deep breath and breathe heavily into that brown bag because everything feels and plays just fine. While some Wiimote and Nunchuk centric games may exhibit some iffy responsiveness, Zelda has been carefully crafted to make the two controllers feel like natural extensions. Swinging your sword by swinging the Wiimote feels so incredibly good and accurate that Id wager to say that its the control scheme of choice. Using the analog stick to move and the Wiimote to point and shoot in aiming mode brings the package together nicely. Ill take a leap of faith here and say that I think the Wiimote Nunchuk duo is the next-generation of FPS controls which will soon rival the keyboard and mouse.
The next-generation of sword swinging is here!
As I set foot into Twilight Princess for the first time I was surprised and happy to see what Nintendo had produced as the new great gameplay twist. Essentially, as Link youre attempting to bring back Hyrule from the dark side and to do this youll have to occasionally cross over into the evil side of the world. While in this world youll actually transform into a wolf that has some unique controls and combat abilities along with a little helper that rides you as you run along. As soon as you complete a task in this bizarro world youll then be sent back to the real world where youll take on the task at hand. Those tasks involve a huge number of NPCs, 9 total huge dungeons, and a ridiculous amount of side quests and mini-games.
Trusty steed!
With that in mind, the side quests are an essential part of the experience if you want to cross the 100 hours played mark. While roaming around the giant world and searching for items or that elusive fish you need to catch, youll have your dedicated steed by your side once more as well. Epona allows you to partake in combat from her back for the first time opening up even more Wii centric gameplay fun.
