Wario: Master of Disguise Review

Gamer gives it 80%

The 8 games you do get to play over and over again are a lot like something you might find on some work time killing flash game website. There’s smash the bug, connect the numbers, connect the power lines, a square arranging puzzle, paint by numbers, draw in the lines, drag the item to the right location while it’s falling, and drag the ball on the path. All are simple and all get boring after the first couple tries. If there’s a sequel lets hope they add more variety.

Drag the poo to the toilet to unlock a chest.

The bosses in Wario: Master of Disguise really are a treat as they all require lots of strategy and timing. You’ll often have to swap between three costumes while juggling what you actually need to do while in them. The only problem with this is that it’s sometimes hard to get the game to understand what you’re trying to do. It takes me at least three times drawing a heart while in the painter disguise to get a heart to appear and not a walking turd. It also often takes me quite a few tries to get Wario to put on the dragon outfit. And even though there are drawing recognition issues, when things are working in your favor, the bosses are a blast.

Some disguises.

As for the outfits, there are 8 of them as well and they’re all very different. You’ll most likely be seeing the painter a lot though as you’ll constantly be drawing blocks to jump up to different kinds of ledges. You get most of them early on and one much later which is odd for pacing. Each of them have multiple abilities to unlock like the bat which initially can only fly upward by blowing into the microphone but later can be directed with the d-pad. One zaps with electricity, one lets you see hidden things, one lets you float on water and drive a submarine, and one even lets you draw poop as I stated earlier. Check out the video below for a primer on what’s available.

Even more disguises.

With your mini-map a la Metroid on the top screen along with your life and currently unlocked costumes you traverse the levels much like Metroid. In fact the backtracking and area unlocking is very much like Metroid as well. First Castlevania and now this, Nintendo and friends must have great confidence in this type of game design. Come to think of it, the enemies are much like Castlevania’s lately as they’re all dumber than dirt and drop little bits of things. Those gems you pick up from enemies and other things help you level up which increases your hearts. Cracking a regular old chest gets you money that unlocks things in the book at the main menu. They’re all just frivolous things but at least you get some kind of reward for going back through the levels after you beat the game.

View all the crap you've unlocked.

Due to a few gameplay hiccups here and there and some rather boring gameplay in other spots Wario doesn’t quite approach greatness. It’s a good fun diversion for those who like the platformer/puzzle/Metroid hybrid but all others can probably skip it.

Import Friendly?

You’ll miss the story and that’s about it.

Pros
  • Dolphins that walk upright, have ripped abs, and wear g-strings
  • Nice blending of platforming and puzzles
  • Very fun boss battles
  • Cool use of the touch screen
  • Very lengthy
  • Lots to unlock as well as extra levels
Cons
  • Repetitive treasure chest mini-games
  • Touch screen shape recognition isn’t the best
  • Game is just boring at times
