1.0, Introduction

 

One day a boy named Neku Sakuraba wakes up in the bustling streets of Shibuya and finds himself part of the “Death God Game”. To survive the game, he’ll have to complete missions successfully over a 7 day period or be “erased”.

l  Touch the bottom-right badge icon to enter “Scan Mode”. Touch it again to exit. While in this mode, you can retrieve information from people.

Neku sees a timer on his hand. Some other things appear.

l  Drag Neku around to move him. At this point he can’t attack so move him to dodge the frog’s attacks. Press Select to start. Once you’ve got the hang of moving Neku around, press Start and tap the only option there, “Escape”. If you drag Neku fast he’ll dash and become invincible temporarily.

And just like my hand, there’s a timer on it.

We have to hurry! There’s only 20 minutes left!

Well, Neku! Lets hurry to 104!

 

l  You’ll see 104 is to the north so try taking the path. Neku bumps into an invisible wall then notices someone in red watching them. Seems the guy was there to confirm they’ve joined a pact. The wall disappears and so does the mystery guy. Head on north.

 

Shiki

We’re here!!

 

Neku

The timer’s gone…

 

Shiki

Thank goodness… We passed…

What are you being so relaxed about?

 

Neku

What the?!

 

???

Of course you passed, that was so easy~

 

Shiki

Who is it!!

 

Don’t tell me… A Death God?!

 

Neku

Death God?!

You two are going to die anyway sooner or later.

Neku

Ugh! Those monsters again!

 

Shiki

Neku! You’re used to battles now right?

 

This time, try fighting while concentrating in my direction too.

 

Neku

What?!

 

You fight your own battle!

 

Shiki

Please… You have to do that to defeat the Noise!!

Here we go!

 

l  To control Shiki in the top screen, use the D-Pad or XYAB buttons to follow through the arrows in the “Combo Map” that appears. If you don’t press anything for a while, the game will go into auto-mode and Shiki will fight automatically. Press Select to start when ready. The next battle teaches you more about the “Slide Cross Battle” system. Shiki and Neku shares the same HP bar and by creating combos, a ball of light will appear and flow to the next screen, boosting attack power. Defeating enemies will earn you XP that levels Neku up while BP is used to power up that badges you have. Throwing away badges you don’t want will exchange them with 500 Yen. Badges with a red jewels can be exchanged in shops and are very important in developing your characters.

Here? We’re probably under the bridge near the station somewhere.

“Free the statue from its curse.”

It’s a timer for the mission.

Looks like it’s been a day already.

It’s been a day already?!

 

Shiki

And… It seems we’ve already slept…

 

But anyway! Lets do our best for today’s mission!

“Do our best for today’s mission?”

 

“And “It seems we’ve already slept”…?”

 

“How can something like that happen?”

 

“We arrived at that 104 place then we defeated some Noise…”

 

“And now she’s saying we’ve been sleeping since then?”

Could that statue be the Hacikou?

 

Neku

“No, maybe we passed out?”

 

“Then when we came to, we arrived here…”

 

“I don’t remember passing out though…”

Shiki

Hey, Neku! Are you listening to me?!

If we don’t work together, we can’t solve the missions!

Do you really have to go so far and ignore me that much?

 

*Sigh* I guess it won’t go well after all…

Alright! Since nothing’s going to happen staying here…

 

Lets just go to the Hachikou!

 

l  Try exiting west but a wall blocks the way. Neku remembers the guy in red and decides to try and read his thoughts for a clue. Try it but you’ll find you can’t read his thoughts like the last time. Neku finds it odd. The man approaches them and tells them they must use the Scan skill to find all the Noise and defeat them all to leave the area. Shiki will also let Neku know about the other badges he has in his pocket. It turns out Shiki couldn’t use the Fire Badge so he passed it onto Neku. It seems only certain people can use certain badges so it’s about trial and error. So, scan for those Noise and in this battle you’ll learn about knocking objects around. Slide the stylus quickly to knock objects into the enemies. You’ll get to experiment with the other badges too such as long rang and sword slashing.

 

l  After the fight, our heroes learn that whenever they fight they’re separated into different dimensions. Shiki and Neku have a little argument again with Shiki saying Neku doesn’t listen to her because of his headphones while Neku finds her speaking too much. He runs off and Shiki catches up in the next area. Suddenly, a guy named “Beat” appears before them saying he’s here to pay them back about something. Just before he attacks our two heroes, a young boy steps into say he has the wrong people. Beat does a quick check trying to scan Shiki and Neku’s mind but can’t. They must be participants in the game too. The tall guy introduces himself as Beat and the boy as Rhyme. They had met a pink haired girl dressed in black a while ago and couldn’t get through to the 104 area. Thanks to her, they had to fight a lot of Noise and that’s why Beat was so angry. He apologises for jumping to conclusions. The new friends also explain about using the mobile.

 

l  Choose the first topic to learn that you can edit what badges you’re using with your mobile. You’ll also an extra free badge. Continue speaking to them about the other topics. It seems you can’t use the Scan ability on Death Gods such as the pink haired girl or other participants in the game. Other than that, it seems all the participants are working together because yesterday, Beat and Rhyme didn’t manage to clear the mission before their timer ran out yet, they’re still alive. In other words, it must have been because Shiki and Neku cleared it. Beat and his partner suggests they all team up together but Neku is against it. After all, he can’t scan there minds and there’s no proof that they’re not Death Gods themselves. Beat doesn’t like Neku’s attitude and decides to leave with Rhyme. Shiki is angry too because things could have gotten easier for them. Neku doesn’t care. He doesn’t need other’s people help. He doesn’t need to be dragged down. He walks off. Shiki just doesn’t understand him. Now you have access to the mobile phone icon and also the new badge that replenishes HP.

 

l  At this point, Neku isn’t equipped with any badges so you’ll have to enter the new menu to do so. If you enter the menu you’ll learn about levelling up. You can use EXP you earn from battles to level up characters to make them stronger but at the same time, the drop rate (indicated by the star) will lower too. The drop rate affects whether Noise will drop new badges or not thus, you might actually want to lower your character’s levels too. You can adjust the battle difficulty but you’ll require a certain item to do so. Now enter the badge menu to sort out your deck. There are 3 types of badges; Positive, Negative and Neutral. Tapping on a badge will give you various stats such as the price you can sell them at. Badges that can still be upgraded are in the “Stock” tab and those that are maxed out are in the “Master” tab. Only equipped badges in your “Deck” receives BP as you would expect.

 

l  After equipping badges, follow the path to find the guy in red again. Neku tries to confront him thinking he’s a Death God too but he just reminds them of their goal and walks off. Meanwhile Shiki catches up and is again annoyed at Neku acting alone. They spot a statue but don’t see anything wrong with it. The game will tell you it’s “game over” if you lose all your HP so best to save before proceeding. Now use your Scan ability to find Noise near the statue. The mission probably means getting rid of all of them but after clearing them out, the timer hasn’t gone away. Maybe it’s another statue, the Hachikou after all? Neku wonders what it is. Shiki can’t believe he doesn’t know. It’s the dog statue they passed by the other day so enter the next area.

Phew, we got here safely! Looks like we’ve still got time too!

 

Neku

“This is… The place where I met her yesterday…”

 

“So that path leads here huh…”

 

Shiki

Come on! We have to release the Hachikou from its curse!

 

Neku

And how are we going to do that…?

 

Shiki

Hmmm… Well…

 

Maybe if we defeat all the Noise like we did there…?

 

Neku

“…She has no brains.”

 

“I knew it, you can’t rely on anyone…”

 

“They just get in your way.”

 

l  Try scanning. There’s no Noise but Shiki notices something odd about the statue. They decide to go up closer to examine it.

 

Shiki

Hmmm… This feels different from a normal Hachikou statue…

 

I’m sure…

 

It didn’t look like this before…

 

l  Check the statue up close and then speak to Shiki about the various topics. You’ll learn about an annual event that by touching the statue at a certain place, a person can gain good fortune from it. The spot changes every year and if you touch the wrong spot, you’re supposed to get cursed. Return to the previous area and Scan the guy in the grey shirt in the NE corner. Seems he wants to give the Hachikou a good polish because it’s so dirty. So return to the statue, inspect it and start cleaning it up. You’ll enter a battle.

 

Shiki

Neku! The timer’s gone! We’ve beaten the mission!

 

Looks like both the Moyai and Hachikou statues had Noise around them.

 

Neku

So the mission was just to defeat the Noise around them huh.

 

 

Shiki

Neku

Shiki

Earlier you said you don’t need companions didn’t you?

 

Neku

Yeah, what about it?

 

Shiki

Well, we solved the Hachikou puzzle thanks to me, no?

 

Neku

If I didn’t notice there was something strange about the Hachikou…
