It has been 16 years since the original FFIII was released on the NES (also known as the “Family Computer” or “FamiCom” in Japan) and due to various problems, the developers at Squaresoft (now known as Square-Enix) hadn’t been able to port the title over to any of the newer, more advanced consoles. It was also the only title in the “Final Fantasy” series of games that has never received an official release in English in the West. However, after a sudden announcement that the game was going to be remade for the DS at the “Nintendo DS Preview!” conference, Hiromichi Tanaka, the director of the original FFIII game, gathered up all the original game staff at Square-Enix.
Here is a remake that the team worked hard on, trying to maintain the original game for the nostalgia of fans while at the same time, trying to make it appealing for players of the new generation. Besides a 3D makeover, a lot of balancing has been done to the many jobs available.
Note that this guide is intended for those who don’t know Japanese but can’t wait for the English release of this game. There will be an English version a few months later from the Japanese release date so you may want to wait until then before playing.
Story
Protected by the crystals of light, the once peaceful land has forever been changed by the great tremor. Without warning, the earthquake pulled the crystals into the earth, upsetting the world’s fragile balance. It seems as if all hope is lost–but as the Gulgan prophecy foretold, four souls blessed with the light shall once again restore balance to the world…
Near the small village of Ur, fate guides Luneth to a sentient crystal that changes his life forever. As the light of the crystal fades, Luneth embarks on a journey to seek three others who share his destiny to search for the remaining crystals, and fight the battle of light and darkness…

Luneth
An orphan who was raised by the elder of Uru, Priest Topapa. Filled with curiosity, Luneth is always a positive and outward looking but, there is something missing about him that makes him the type who draws out the powers in others. Although his words are daring, he is usually ends up regretting them. Even so, he takes responsibility for his words and will work hard until the last moment without running away. Luneth always manages to raise the mood around him.

Ingus
A capable soldier who has sworn his loyalty to serve King Sassoon. There is no one in the castle who does not know his valour. Out of the four chosen heroes, Ingus is the calmest of them all and is like an older brother.

Arc
A boy who grew up together with Luneth and who was also raised by the village elder Topapa. He is always turning his thoughts away from things so he never manages to progress by himself. He prefers reading more than outdoor activities and everyone recognises the great knowledge he possesses.

Refia
A girl who was brought up by Mr. Taka from the blacksmith store in Kazus. Disliking the tough training Mr. Taka was putting her through, she has ran away from home repeatedly. Beautiful and confident, she is a kind girl at heart. Always cheerful and energetic, Refia is always giving others her opinion positively which even manages to get through to Luneth.
Pressing X or R will bring up the following in-game menu:

Items > Use / Sort / Key Items
Magic > Use / Memorise / Remove / Swap
Equip > Equip / Remove / Remove All
Status > {See the screen below.}
Job > {See the Jobs section}
Config > Message Speed (Slow, Normal, Fast) / Cursor (Default / ) / Movement (Walk, Run) / Dominant Hand (Left, Right)
Suspend is basically “Quick Save” which allows you to save the game anywhere you want. Once you get the white warning message, you can turn off your DS. You can then resume the game again later. The next time you load up the game on your DS, be sure not to select New Game or Load Game or you won’t be able to resume from the dungeon. Instead select “Continue Game”.
Save gives you three slots to save in and each time you save, there will be a confirmation at the bottom. Answer Yes (はい) to save. One thing to note is that saving can only be done on the world map. Otherwise, you will just have to use Suspend and hope no one else plays the game.
Selecting Status will give you the following screen:

During battles, the main menu choices you’ll be interested in is Attack (たたかう), Defend (ぼうぎょ), Item (アイテム), Equip (そうび), Arrange (こうたい) and Run (にげる). There will also be abilities that appear depending on the job you choose. View the job section for more details.
Mognet is a mailing system in the game that allows players around the world to exchange mail messages as well as activate side quests. To access Mognet, visit a Moogle in any of the towns and speak to him. You will then have the following menu:
Send a Letter.
List of Letters
Friends
Mog House
“Send a Letter” allows you to mail friends that are nearby by link (近くの友達へ) or, those that are far away by Wi-Fi (遠くの友達へ). To send a long distance message, you will need your friend’s Friend Code which can be found by looking in the “Friends” option. Other options include mailing NPCs by selecting their name under the Wi-Fi icon. A letter will then be sent out and the time you need to wait for a reply varies. After that, you will either have to wait 1 real time hour before you can send another letter or, set your DS’ clock forward. Note that this trick only works with NPCs and not with messages sent using the WFC network. I suggest setting the date forward by one day to make sure NPC replies arrive back.
The first time you register a friend code (FC), you and your friend must both be online at the same time to confirm that you both registered each other’s FC. Otherwise, you won’t be able to send messages and the FC on the list will be greyed out.
“List of Letters” will list any messages that are sent by your friends by default. Each time you connect to WFC, any messages sent to you will be received and you will be able to read them here. You can also check the second option, the NPC listing, for any replies to the letters you sent out to them. Although this will usually be a “How are you?” message, sometimes they will ask you to do something for them, unlocking some side quests.
In the “Friends” option, you will be able to view the list of friends (友達のリスト) you have registered on your game. You can also select the option after that to input a Friend Code or view your own Friend Code, the last option.
Finally, the “Mog House” option allows you to either link to your friends DS or to the WFC network to check for messages.
If you’re curious about what the NPC messages say, here is a translation:

When we were young we went out to sea to adventure once. Deep in the sea, we saw a giant shadow. Now where did we see it again…

To unlock the additional side quests, you will have to meet the following conditions via the Mognet system before you can receive the quest message you need from an NPC.
l The first reply that NPCs will send you will be a “How are you?” message.
l Send / Receive a total of 1 message from friends and, 2 from the NPCs to gain access to a second reply from NPCs.
l Send / Receive a total of 3 messages from friends and, 3 from the NPCs to gain access to a third reply from NPCs.
l Send / Receive a total of 8 messages from friends and, 4 from the NPCs to gain access to a fourth reply from NPCs.
l Allus’ 4th reply can only be received after you receive the 4th reply from the 4 Old Men.
l Cid’s 4th reply is received automatically after you complete Princess Sara’s quest to fix her pendant.
l The method of receiving Taka’s 5th reply is currently unknown.
6.1 Unlocking the Onion Knight Job
l After receiving the 4th reply from Topapa, return to Ur and speak to him in the village chapel.
Topapa:
Ah, you came Luneth. It looks like the children went off to the Altar Cave…
I’m sorry but please hurry and go check on them for me.
l Leave the village and go north into the Altar Cave. Go inside, down the stairs then follow the path in for an event and prepare to fight 3 Bombs.
Arc:
There they are!
3 Bombs surround the children.
Luneth:
Hey, they’re in danger.
Refia:
Lets help them!
Luneth’s party runs up to the Bombs.
Arc:
Hey! We’re the ones you’re fighting!!
Battle
l The Bombs should be pretty low level so you shouldn’t have problems defeating them..
Children:
You- You saved us, Arc…
You’re good! I think better of you now!
Ingus:
Listen. You need to stop playing in such dangerous places.
Refia:
Come on, lets get back to the village.
Luneth’s party starts walking out.
Children:
Hey, Arc!
We found this. You can have it!
The children gives Arc a Crystal Shard.
l Congratulations! You now have the Onion Knight (たまねぎけんし) job unlocked!
6.2, Ultimate Weapons for Mastered Jobs
l After receiving the 4th reply from Princess Sara, fly to Sassoon Castle and go up the eastern tower to find her. Speak to her for an event.
Sara:
Ingus! You came!
I was wondering you could find someone who can fix this pendant for me… It’s very important to me.
Ingus:
Princess Sara, leave it to me! I will find someone to fix it!
Sara:
Really?! Thank you! I’m counting on you.
Sara hands over the pendant to Ingus.
l Now go to Kazus, Refia’s home town to find her foster father, Taka. Speak to him for an event.
Taka:
Hmm? It’s rare of you lot to visit me.
Refia:
Well you see, this pendant that belongs to the princess of Sassoon Castle is broken. Can you fix it?
Taka:
Hmmm… Show it to me.
A moment later.
Hmmm… Looks like it’s made from a material I don’t know about.
I’m sorry but, it looks like I can’t help you.
Refia:
I see… I guess we’ll have to go look for someone else who can fix it then.
l For this next part, you will have to have at least one class’ Job Level maxed at 99 and have completed the game once. After you’ve done that, go to NW Salonia to find a female blacksmith in the NE corner.
Blacksmith:
I’m a blacksmith travelling the world in search of the legendary metal.
Ingus:
A blacksmith in training… Pardon me but, I have a favour to ask.
Could you fix this pendant for me? A blacksmith friend of mine couldn’t fix it…
It belongs to a person who is really important to me. Please!
Blacksmith:
You have good eyes for people. All right, I’ll try.
A moment later.
Here you go, it’s done. Take it.
Ingus:
I am in your debt! How can I thank you…
Blacksmith:
Don’t mention it. I actually have a favour to ask in return…
Ingus:
Of course, anything.
Blacksmith:
I heard there is a mythical metal known as “Oreichalcos” in this world.
And I want to challenge myself with it.
I’ll give whatever I make out of it to you so could you bring it to me if you find it?
Ingus:
Understood. We’ll bring it right to you if we come across it.
l Now return to Sassoon Castle to return the pendant to Sara.
Sara:
You really fixed it! Thank you!
Luneth:
What kind of pendant is that?
Sara:
It’s a memento of my mother’s. I’m glad it’s been restored.
Thank you, Ingus and all of you too! Please rest yourselves in the castle for the day!
l Now fly back to Canaan where Cid lives and mail him. You should get the 4th reply “There’s a monster in my basement!” some few hours later maybe. Once you have the message and read it, go to Cid’s house and speak to him.
Cid:
Ah, you all came! It seems there’s a monster in our basement!
I would get rid of it if I was a little younger but at my age, I just can’t.
I’m sorry to bother you all with this but, please get rid of it for us.
l Run into the basement and you’ll find a monster to the west. Walk into it to start the fight with Aion.
Luneth:
Here it is!
Ingus:
Alright, lets do this everyone!
Battle
l An extremely easy fight that should take 2 normal hits or so from a melee class.
Luneth:
Phew… Well, that’s it gone.
Refia:
It dropped something.
Arc:
I’ve never seen this metal before.
l Now that you have a metal that even the knowledgeable Arc doesn’t know about. Go back up to speak to Cid to let him know the monster’s gone.
Luneth:
We got rid of it.
Cid:
Ah, thanks a lot. Hmm? What’s that you’re holding?
Arc:
The monster was holding onto this.
Cid:
Hey! That’s Oreichalkos! A very expensive metal!
There isn’t a blacksmith in this world that can forge anything out of it. Not even Taka…
Luneth:
We know one that might be able to. We’ll go ask her.
Cid:
I see. Well, thanks for your help!
Good luck in your journey!
l Now, if you’re not already on the Invincible, fly back to get it because you’ll need it to get to Falgabard, the town of Dark Knights The travelling blacksmith has moved. Enter the town and find her next to the weapons shop.
Ingus:
Is this what you’re looking for?
Blacksmith:
!! That’s Oreichalkos… Amazing! I can’t believe you really brought some back for me.
Alright! I’m going to try forging it right away!
Ingus:
Please do.
Ingus hands over the Oreichalkos metal.
Blacksmith:
Right! It’s been a long time since I had to use my skills to their limits so wait here for me please!
A moment later.
Sorry I kept you waiting! It went well.
This is the greatest piece of work I’ve done in my entire life!
As promised, I will give this to you.
The female blacksmith hands over an Ultima Weapon.
I’m going to continue my travels. We may meet again.
Ingus:
Indeed. Take care!
Blacksmith:
You too. Goodbye.
l No, that’s not the ultimate weapon but, it is a very good sword. You’ll now notice that the blacksmith’s gone off again. Now you must find her whenever you master a job to collect the real ultimate weapon and a job card. The female blacksmith can appear in any of the places listed below. Note that the places marked with a question mark (?) are unconfirmed and also for every job she congratulates you on, she will disappear so… Good luck! Read the Job section to find out what each of their ultimate weapons are.

2. Salonia, 2nd floor of the castle basement.
3. NW Salonia, In the NE corner. (?)

Arc:
I never expected to find a cave here…
Luneth:
There’s nothing here! Lets forget this and go home!
Just as Luneth turns his back to leave, a giant figure appears behind him.
Arc:
Luneth! Behind you!!
Luneth:
Woah!! It’s here!!
l After you beat him, you will gain a Metal Card.
Luneth:
Haa… Haa… What the hell was that?
Ingus:
Such strength... It couldn’t be the meteor Allus mentioned…
Arc:
But we beat it!
Refia:
We did. Does that mean we’ve gotten stronger?
Ingus:
Yes. We are certainly growing up.
Arc:
Come on! We have to hurry on our journey! 120,000
6.4, Monster Encyclopaedia & Hidden Game Stats
l Not exactly a side quest but if you fly to the town of Gysahl on the Floating Continent, you can view a Monster Encyclopaedia and some hidden game stats. Enter the inn and then run along the right wall in the first room to find a hidden passageway. Speak to the old man in the room and you’ll be able to view all the monsters that you have ever fought in the game! Also, select the second tab to view some extra stats about your current file. It lists the following from top to bottom – Completion Time, Chests Discovered, Number of Battles, Number of Times Ran Away, Highest Damage, Highest Number of Hits.
Jobs (or classes) are unlocked by visiting various crystals throughout the game and can be changed via the Job option in the main menu. Apart from collecting experience in battles to raise their main levels, characters also collect Job Points (JP) to raise their Job Level too which can be found under the amount of experience points they have in the Status screen. The higher this number is, the better they are at their jobs. E.g., a Monk will hit the enemy more times and miss less often while the White Mage will heal more per cure spell.
7.1 Job Points
JPs work fairly similarly to XP. For each job, a certain number of JPs are assigned to each action they perform. The better suited a job is to that action, the more JPs that character will gain. i.e., Most melee classes will gain the most JPs by using the Attack command including the Ranger. Mages on the other hand will gain the most by casting magic. However, the “special” classes with their own dedicated abilities such as the Thief will gain the most JPs by using the Steal action a lot while the Dragoon will gain more using the “Jump” command. It might be obvious but, you will not gain any JPs for running away!
So in other words, the more you use actions that are specific to a job, the more likely you’ll gain a Job Level. Enemies with large amounts of HP will help out a lot such as bosses!
7.2 Job Changing
Whenever you try to change jobs, you will be asked to confirm and notice a number. This number is the number of battles the character changing jobs must go through before he/she is used to the new job. A status down arrow will appear under the character’s name until these “practice” battles are done. There is a maximum of 10 such battles.
Below you’ll find a list of the 22 jobs available from the Crystals. To unlock the 23rd and strongest job of all, the “Onion Knight”, you must complete a side quest. Read the Side Quests section for more details. Special Onion Gear can be obtained by fighting the rare dragons in the Sylx Tower; Yellow Dragon (Onion Helm), Green Dragon (Onion Shield). Note that the Onion gear drops are also rare which means finding a dragon doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to get a piece of the Onion Gear set.
The Onion Knight only becomes the strongest job when a character is at level 99. It is the only job that will max out all stats on a character at this level. The job can make use of all Black and White magic but, can not make use of Summon magic.
Note that some of the ability names below were translated by taking names from FFXI where possible.
