Chou Soujuu Mecha MG Review

Xcomp gives it 90%

There are over 100 MGs to collect in the game and not all of them can be bought from the workshops. Some you have to collect two part robot plans before Garoy will build you one for a price. MGs are split into 6 different categories that specialise in a certain task. To name a few, there are the speedy Car Types that are great for crashing into structures at high speed, Heavy Build Types that can move large masses easily, Bow Types that make use of enormous bows, the Ammo Types which are great for long range attacks and the Clockwork Type which does some serious damage etc.

These things run on windup clockwork too!

Not only do models look very different but, they also have their own unique looking special control panels which make missions play out very differently. For example, all types that can change into a four wheeled vehicle has a steering wheel and a gear stick while they’re in vehicle mode. Once they revert to robot form, the wheel disappears and is replaced a joystick that controls the MG’s arms. Ammo Types have a reloading barrel control where you have to manually reload your ammunition before you can fire more shots while Bow Types have a bow you that you drag back to fire. I could go on and on about all the different types of control panels that you’ll come across because there’s so much variety!

Pinging arrows at the enemy from range is always fun!

It does take a while before you get used to a new MG’s control panel using the stylus. Some of them are a little silly such as the Ammo Type MGs where you have to load every single bullet manually into the barrel although this maybe there to balance out the units.

As you drive your MGs around using the D-Pad, you view them from a third person perspective from the back and as you move, you can see the camera shake with each step you take. Coupled with the sound effect of those big heavy metal feet landing in the ground, it all feels very real as if you can actually feel those tremors despite only playing them on a little handheld console. If you don’t like the camera shaking however, you can turn off the effect. Collision detection is fairly good as you can crush lamp posts and trees if you happen to run into them (which you’ll probably do a lot) and, buildings can be knocked over if they are run into too much depending on your MG.

3… 2… 1… Go!

The top screen shows the 3D environment where you pilot your giant MG and also some status bars showing the amount of ammo you have, your MG’s health and heat meter. Every move you make using the control panel via the touch screen causes your MG to heat up a little and when this meter is full, you can’t do anything with the panel until it cools down.
