Weapon attacks are carried out by either tapping the A button or holding the button down (you can hold two weapons at a time, each with a different ability when held down), and magic attacks (you can choose from several “Mana Children”, each with their own magic) are performed by summoning the child by holding B. X and Y are used for items, and when the gem meter in the lower corner becomes full, the select button activates a super mode which changes the A charge attack into a super attack for a limited time.
Surprisingly it’s a bit of an odd non-standard control scheme. It strangely feels like it needed to be on a system with more buttons, despite having been planned as a DS game from the start. Yet, in practice it still works fine (well besides running at angles) and players will get used to it quickly.
Closing Thoughts
Despite some iffy controls, as a dungeon-crawler CoM provides a fairly enjoyable way to kill numerous hours on the go. The nice graphics and really nice music help to smooth out a game that otherwise is a little bit stale. Overall, CoM sadly isn’t that hit people may have been looking for, yet for the right price (ie. $30 or less), it’s a solid buy.
Import Friendly
Yes. Surprisingly, there is not all that much text inthe game despite being an action rpg. Dungeons are straightforward and towns just consist of talking to a few people.
Pros
- Solid dungeon crawler
- Ability to hold two weapons (weapons are fun!)
- Great music
- Nice art
Cons
- No rpg-like journey taking you across various locations
- Fighting is a bit shallow
- Dungeons are incredibly repetitive
- Controls are slightly bad
