Luminous Arc Review

Xcomp gives it 84%

It’s been 1000 years since the great legendary battle of the evil witches and God but now rumours have it they are back to seek vengeance, controlling monsters and attacking innocent people. But no sooner had this rumour passed around the land, the Luminous Church confirmed it was true and claimed that they had found the hideout of their “witch”. The Ever Garden Knights captain “Heath” and his students are dispatched to hunt down the witch but Alf senses something wrong. The witch was too easy to defeat. His thoughts are soon proved correct as the real Crimson Witch appears before them, having already wiped out many towns and obtained several powerful Labis Tear crystals. With this threat at hand, the only remaining Ever Garden team is once again dispatched to eliminate the witch and find the other Labis Tears before her and the story picks up from there.

Witches are on the loose again and the Luminous Church isn’t happy about it.

Unlike some other games, Luminous Arc doesn’t force you through a tutorial. From the very first battle you’re really left on your own although some help is available via the pause menu. That being said, those who have ever played an SRPG will have no problems with the turn based gameplay as the usual elements are there. E.g. Moving units around a square grid, attack from behind for more damage, height advantage, classes and elemental attacks. Units gain XP depending on their actions and level up.

Differences come in the form of the “Flash Drive” gauge which allows characters to execute their special skills depending on how many Flash Points you have. Every time you attack an enemy, you fill up a little of the gauge and when it’s full you gain one FP. There is also a Symphonism system allowing you to execute more powerful character combo attacks. As soon as you’ve saved up three FPs and a character you can perform a combo with is within range, you can execute the move.
