6.0, Story Mode

One day a letter arrives for you from Luke about how he and Professor Layton found out about a secret that they couldn't let anyone know and the story begins.

Luke and Professor Layton have been asked to help solve a inheritance dispute but it was no normal dispute. Two months ago, a millionaire named Alan Linford died. His family opened up the letter he left behind and found that their family treasure "The Golden Fruit" was hidden somewhere in town. Whoever was to find this Golden Fruit was to inherit Alan's entire fortune. Immediately, the family members set out to search for it, trying to be the first one to find it but in the end, no one could. In fact, no one had ever heard of such a family treasure. What was Alan Linford up to? He was an incomprehensible character indeed and Professor Layton regrets he couldn't meet the man before his death. Luke replies Alan must be very much like the Professor. Then he wonders what this "Golden Fruit" could be. It could be anything and the mystery has caught the Professor's interest. But besides the family fortune, Layton feels that there are other secrets behind the "Golden Fruit". For now, they'll just have to go see what they can find.

Laughing, Luke comments how the Professor, although an archaeologist, was like a detective rushing to the scene of a crime just now. Layton chuckles back for he was not a detective. It just happened that Alan's wife saw him in the newspapers and decided to request his help. As an English gentleman, he could not refuse a beautiful lady's request.

They were now nearing their destination so Luke takes out the map they were given but to his astonishment, it's a maze. Alan's wife was trying to test if Professor Layton really was the man who could solve this mystery. Luke decides to try solving it instead since he was the Professor's student.

Puzzle 1 - Where is the Town?

Picarots: 10

Circle the town that Layton and Luke should be headed to. The town Alan's wife lives in isn't connected to any other town by road.

The Professor actually knew the answer already. They were now approaching the town.

As they get out of the car, they look up to see a tall tower of dark looking houses stacked up upon one another. They walk on to find a hanging bridge they'll have to cross to enter the town.

Bridge

l  Tap the man on the other side.

Professor Layton calls over to the man and tells him they want to enter the town but the man, Dice refuses to lower the bridge to strangers. Layton explains Madame Salome was expecting them but Dice still can't lower the bridge because it had a special mechanic. The handle needs to be inserted and if Professor Layton is really who he says he is then he should be able to solve the puzzle.

Puzzle 2 - The Handle and the Hole

Picarots: 15

You need to fit the correct handle on the lever. Tap the one you think is the right one.

Even though Dice didn't like lowering the bridge to strangers, he lets Madame Salome's guests in and it was time to explore.

Town Entrance

l  Tap the man for an explanation about Hint Medals then tap the moving barrel at the hotel for one. Tap the barrel towards the centre passageway and the window to the right with a sort of white bag sticking out for two more. Now tap the old lady for a puzzle.

Puzzle 3 - Strange Hats

Picarots: 10

Here are 4 different top hats. Each is of the same height but the bases are of different lengths. However, one of these hats has a height and length of equal size. Which hat is it?

l  Tap the shoe and enter the next area. The Professor will explain about his bag and saving. After your next destination is revealed, the game prompts you to save. Answer Yes or No.

Town Plaza

Hint Medals:

Right barrel, left trash can and window under the smoking chimney.

l  Tap the boy. He'll tell you Salome's mansion is to the right but he challenges you with a puzzle. Win and he'll tell you about the town.

Puzzle 4 - Where is the House?

Picarots: 20

Can you find my house? I can see the sunrise if I leave my house then go left, right at the first junction then, left again at the next junction. Which is my house?

l  Once you beat the puzzle, you'll learn Alan owns the entire land the town is built on. Now tap the clock tower for the next puzzle.

Puzzle 5 - Digital Clocks

Picarots: 50

On a digital clock like the one you see here, how many times a day do you see three same numbers appearing? Note that the clock here is using the 12 hour standard which means both midnight and lunchtime is represented by 12:00. You can use any write anything on the touch screen to make memos. When ready, tap the centre button and write down the answer in the boxes provided.

l  Go right as the boy told you to

Path to the Mansion

Hint Medals:

Bag to the right, sign by the blue door and the window of the centre house.

l  Our heroes find a man blocking the way to the mansion and it doesn't look like he's going to move out the way. Speak to Marco and he'll be a little suspicious but he'll let them pass if they can solve his puzzle.

Puzzle 6 - Which Weight is the Lighter One

Picarots: 40

Out of the 8 similar looking weights just one of them is fairly light. Using the balance just two times, find out which one it is. To check weights, drag them onto the plates then push the red button in the centre. Tapping the top-left button will restart the puzzle but be warned that the weight you're after is random and changes every time you restart!

l  Enter next area.

Mansion Garden

Hint Medals:

The hat in the boat, steps to the left and the bush to the top-right.

l  Speak to Lamon who gets a little rude towards our heroes. He'll try testing them with a puzzle.

Puzzle 7 - Chicks and Wolves

Picarots: 50

Now I'm sure you'll have come across this puzzle sometime in school! Your goal is to carry all 3 wolves and chicks over to the other side. However, you must abide by the following rules:

l  Only a maximum of two can ride on the craft.

l  The craft won't move if there is nothing on it.

l  If there are more wolves than chicks on either shore then the chicks will be eaten and you lose.

There are no limits to the number of turns but the minimum is 11.

l  Lamon apologises for his rudeness then leads the way to the mansion to meet Salome and the others. It seems she wasn't the only one requesting the Professor's help. Now before leaving for the other side, check the flower bed next to the steps for another puzzle.

Puzzle 8 - A Reward for Sowing Seeds

Picarots: 20

Haja and Noro are hired by a farm to sow 10 acres of land with some flower seeds. Without splitting up the work, Haja starts from the east and Noro from the west. Haja can cover 1 acre of land very 20 minutes and Noro needs 40 minutes to do so. However, Noro sow seeds 3 times faster than Haja. After being paid 100 dollars, how should the money be divided between them? Again, you can write on the screen to do any workings. When ready, tap the bottom middle button to enter the answer.

Puzzle 10 - The Stray Kanji

Picarots: 30

Out of the Kanji listed, one of them is an odd one out. You won't be able solve this without some Japanese knowledge so, select the third Kanji on the first row "Ji ()." The reason it being the odd one out is that all the Kanji presented can be read as if they were Katakana symbols. "Ji" is the only one that can't be read that way.

l  Go up the stairs to meet the Linford family.

The Reception Hall

Hint Medals:

Plant to the right, picture above Roy and at the edge of the carpet just under Bob's right foot.

Madame Salome walks over to greet Professor Layton saying how much of an honour it was but suddenly, a loud explosion is heard rocking the room. Salome's cat Claudia runs off and she calls for her butler. She seems to be worried more about the cat than that explosion.

l  Speak to Bob the man in the hat then Roy, Alan Linford's nephew who will try to test the Professor's identity with a puzzle.

Puzzle 11 - An Arc and Lines

Picarots: 20

As you can see, there is a rectangle ABCD that is fitted tightly into a quarter of a circle. If corner B is the centre of the circle what is the length of the red line, AC? Along the bottom, you can see that BC is 5cm long. You can use the screen for any workings and once ready, hit the bottom button and write your answer.

l  After solving the puzzle, Roy is certain about the Professor's identity but he still thinks he is better than him as a man.

l  Speak to Madame Salome who didn't seem to see where her Claudia ran off to. She asks her butler and hearing that he hadn't seen her cat either, she grows furious saying what a useless butler he was. She asks the Professor the same question and he answers that he saw the cat run out the door. Still panicking, she demands why the Professor didn't stop Claudia and holds him personally responsible for what just happened. Salome was worried because the cat can't be separated from her for even one second and it's so delicate that it can't stand the outdoor air. The Professor tries to move on about the inheritance but right now, Claudia's cat takes priority. Luke doesn't like the way Claudia is treating his teacher but the Professor just chuckles it off. He must go look for her cat.

l  Check the chandelier for a hidden puzzle.

Puzzle 110 - The Disappearing 3D Shape

Picarots: 20

Four 3D shapes are constructed using match sticks. By moving just one match stick, change the image so that it becomes only 3 boxes. Remember that you can rotate matchsticks.

Mansion Garden

l  Exit the mansion to find Claudia outside. Try to catch it but it runs away. Meanwhile in the shadows, a man refuses to let Layton get his hands on the treasure…

Puzzle 13 - Mystery of the Sinking Ship

Picarots: 30

None of them can just swim over because of the sharks. If the trip to the island and back takes 9 minutes, how many people are going to get saved?

Path to the Mansion

l  Continue back into the next area where the man with dark glasses, Marco is. Speak to him to find out Claudia ran off to the plaza area. Luke's surprised at how nice Marco actually is. Then the Layton remembers that they didn't checkout the house with the blue door earlier so enter the building.

l  Now examine the big white candle for the next puzzle.

Puzzle 15 - How Many Left?

Picarots: 10

Ten candles are burning away on a table. Two of them are blown out by the wind. A moment later, the man comes back to find one more candle blown out. He closes the window so that the wind can't blow out the candles again and after that, no more candles were extinguished. If not even one candle was removed from the table, how many candles are left on the table in the end?

l  Exit the shop and go to the plaza.

Town Plaza

l  Dice rushes to the Professor and tells him that someone has lifted up the bridge and ran off with the handle's mechanism. He found something strange nearby that seems to be a part of something and hands it over. Now you have the first Mystery Part to construct the mystery object in the Professor's bag. Try catching the cat again and Luke will try to speak to it. He fails and ends up with his face scratched. Speak to the new man that's appeared, Dick, to find out the cat ran off to the west. Try heading west. The Professor will want to go to the hotel to reserve a room first. Before you go there though, enter the house with the blue door.

Town Hall

Hint Medals:

l  Speak to Rodney who will mistaken the Professor as a new resident who just moved in. The Professor says he isn't but Rodney suggests he fills in some documents anyway and a puzzle is started.

Puzzle 16 - A Pen and Triangles

Picarots: 40

In the shape you see, you can see lots of small triangles stuck together and you want to outline all the edges. Each time you dip the pen with ink, you have enough ink to outline 4 triangles as indicated to the left. How many times do you have to dip the pen if you want to outline the 36 triangles? You can draw on the screen for any working. Once ready, hit the bottom button and write your answer.

l  Once you win, Rodney will tell you everyone in town loves puzzles and recommends you solve more of them in future. He also hands you another Mystery Part and suggest you visit Nazoba next door. He's usually out though. Now tap the lower bottom-left pane of the window on the right for another puzzle.

Puzzle 118 - The Red and Black Trump Cards

Picarots: 50

A deck of 52 cards with the jokers removed is shuffled then split into two piles of cards (A and B) on the table, each pile with 26 cards. If this was done 1000 times, how many times would you find the number of black cards in pile A is exactly the same as the number of red cards in pile B? Do any working on the screen then tap the bottom button.

Town Entrance

l  Leave the town hall and go to the town entrance area to find the hotel. Don't go in yet. Instead, speak to Higemafura outside for a puzzle.

Puzzle 017 - Odd One Out 1

Picarots: 30

Each card on the table has a word with a meaning. Which of the cards is the odd one out? Again, since you'll need some Japanese skills for this, the answer is "Jelia (ジェリア).

Now you can start collecting furniture to decorate empty rooms for Luke and the Professor. Now check the photo behind Anna for a puzzle.

At this rate, it will only take the bacterium 1 hour to fill up the jar. If there was two bacteria, how many minutes would it take then?

l  You'll get another piece of the jigsaw puzzle. Now try to catch Claudia and our heroes will use the fish bone to catch her. Now they can finally return to Madame Salome. At this point, the game will reveal that new puzzles are unlocked as you progress through the story. Unlocked puzzles and those that you missed can all be found at House Nazoba.

Linford Mansion

Returning to the Linford Mansion, Professor Layton senses something odd. Panicking, Mache rushes to Luke and the Professor. Professor Layton shows him they got Claudia back but it seems something has happened at the mansion while they were gone. Quickly they make their way upstairs to find Inspector Chelmie appears to be at the mansion to inquire about a certain incident. At first, the Professor thought it was about Claudia but it was not. Madame Salome was very happy to see her Claudia baby however. The Professor asks what was going on and it's revealed that a murder has taken place. Roy Linford has been murdered.

Two hours ago, Inspector Chelmie received a call that someone was laid sprawled out in the hallway and so immediately, he came out to find out more about the matter. There in the mansion, Roy Linford was found dead on the floor. Now Professor Layton himself could be a suspect so the Inspector does not want to reveal anymore details to him even though he tries to ask who called the Inspector. While the reason of death is going under investigation, the Inspector begins his questioning privately in a room. Everyone else was to wait in the reception hall.

Reception Hall

l  Speak to Mache the butler to find out he didn't find out about the murder until the Inspector arrived so he didn't manage to notice anyone suspicious. However, he did find an odd looking cog in the room where Roy died. Then he remembers a cog related puzzle…

Puzzle 28 - Where is the Mark?

Picarots: 30

Taking an 8 pointed shape, it is held the same way as the left shape in diagram A so that the red spot is at the top. Blowing at it so that it spins round to reveal the blue side, a black spot is seen as in the right shape in diagram A. If you held the same shape with its white side facing you and the red spot near the bottom as in the left of diagram B then again, you give it a blow, where would the black spot end up? Circle one of the spots then the red button to answer.

l  He hands over the cog and another Mystery Part saying he believes the Professor can solve all the mysteries they'll be coming up against. Now speak to Bob who can't believe Roy got murdered even though he was the type to get hated. Thinking the Professor is a detective, Bob insists he catches whoever the murderer is. The Professor says he's not a detective but they will have to catch the murderer or there will be much danger. Bob suspects the murderer maybe after the inheritance but that means it could be anyone, even himself. To dampen the suspicion the Professor may have against him, he claims that Roy and him were very close and got along well. Speaking of family, he remembers a certain puzzle…

Puzzle 27 - The Chair Beside You

Picarots: 40

Here are six brothers, Taro 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. A brother can not sit next to another brother who is the next oldest or youngest because he can't get along with either of them (i.e. Taro 3 wouldn't get along with Taro 2 or 4). Also, Taro 3 and Taro 5 have been having a fight so they can't sit next to each other either. Arrange the seating for the brothers so that they can have their meal without any conflict then tap the red button.

l  Bob hands over another Mystery Part and asks the Professor to investigate carefully. The Professor agrees saying that he too could be a suspect now. Speak to the Inspector who checks with Mache that everyone who lives in the mansion has been gathered together. Mache says only Lamon was missing but he was no where to be seen. Salome orders Mache to go find him but he didn't know where Lamon was. Could he have run away because he was the murderer?

l  Try to leave the room and Professor Leyton will want to speak with Madame Salome. Speak to Mache to find out she's resting in her room because this horrifying incident was too much stress for her. Luke remarks how Salome isn't as strong a woman as she seemed when she was acting so scary earlier on and the Professor tells young Luke that they must be considerate towards the ladies. Luke apologises for his manners. The Professor then requests to see Madame Salome and Mache goes into let her know. Enter the next room.

Hint Medals:

On the chair, the flowers on the desk and the surface to the left of Layton's Bag icon.

l  Speak to Salome and the Professor will tell her this incident maybe related to the "Golden Fruit" and perhaps Lamon's disappearance too. Hearing that, Salome requests the Professor to find Lamon and bring him back to the mansion. She just can't rest with all the suspicions set on Lamon at the moment and would like him proved innocent. Now you have the opportunity to save.

l  Try to leave the room and the Professor notices the photo with Madame Salome in it holding a baby. It seems to be her daughter Aroma. Madame Salome looks no different to Luke than she does now and the Professor tells him that beautiful women never change.

Reception Hall

l  Speak to the inspector for a puzzle he solved when he was younger.

Puzzle 29 - The Five Suspects

Picarots: 20

Here are five suspects who give the following statements:

A: "1 person within the 5 of us is lying."

B: "2 people within the 5 of us is lying."

C: "3 people within the 5 of us is lying."

D: "4 people within the 5 of us is lying."

E: "All of us are lying."

You want to release only the ones telling the truth. How many people will you release?

l  You receive another mystery part. Speak to Madame Salome now to learn that the baby in the photo wasn't really her daughter but she doesn't say who it was. The Professor decides to go ask the butler more about the baby. So leave the room and speak with Mache. It turns out the woman in the photo was in fact not even Madame Salome but Linford's wife. Mache isn't surprised our heroes mistook the two people to be the same person because they do look and act very alike. The Professor wonders if they could be blood related but Mache knows no further. Madame Salome was just brought into the home one day all of a sudden.

Linford Mansion

l  Leave the mansion to find Claudia holding Roy's glasses in her mouth. The Professor takes it back to the Chelmie since it could be a clue to Roy's murder. However, Chelmie isn't interested at all and gets annoyed. Irritated, he tells the Professor to concentrate on finding Linford's fortune instead if he has so much time to go around picking things up to give him. Luke is unhappy at the way Chelmie treats the Professor but the Professor himself doesn't mind. He decides to go ask around in town.

l  Go into the garden where the boat is. Speak to Victoria who doesn't seem to know where Lamon is but you'll get a puzzle to solve.

Puzzle 30 - One Stroke Drawings

Picarots: 30

I'm sure you'll know about many drawings that you can finish by starting at one point and then ending at another without ever lifting your pen off the paper. Out of the four drawings here, one of them is an impostor. Which one is it? Circle and then tap the red button.

l  You'll receive another mystery part. Victoria looks at Luke and warns him about the dark fortune that awaits him tonight but Luke isn't afraid. Back track to the next area where Marco is. Speak to him to try finding out where Lamon is but he isn't of much help. He warns them not to go near the tower in the north. After he leaves our heroes alone, the Professor thinks they should go find out more about the tower. They might be able to get there through the clock tower. Before you do that, speak to Marco again for a puzzle.
