Professor Layton and the Curious Village Review

When a puzzle crops up, the question is displayed on the top screen along with the number of “Picacarots” it’s worth. The more Picacarots there are for you to score, the more difficult the puzzle is and they can range from a low easy “10” to the high head scratching “99”. Every time you fail to get the answer correct, some Picacarots are deducted but it is never reduced to zero so you can try to get the answer as many times as you like.

One of the few classic puzzles you’ll probably have seen before.

There are all sorts of puzzles in the game. Some are similar to maths problems where you would most likely resort to algebra while others require a bit of common sense. There are some classic ones you might have even met before such as getting three wolves and three baby chicks over a river using a raft. For this particular problem, the rules were that only one or two passengers are allowed on the raft and any one time and, for the raft to move there must be at least one passenger on it. If at any time there are more wolves than baby chicks on either shore, you lose.

There’s a good balance between the number of puzzles where you just have to write down an answer and ones where you get to fiddle around using the stylus such as the puzzle mentioned above. For puzzles where you might need a bit of working, the game provides enough space on the touch screen for you to write on. Very handy if you’re on the move and don’t have access to pen and paper! One such puzzle involves counting the number of times three same numbers appear on a 12 hour digital clock in one day.

Workings can be done on the touch screen before you answer.

A lot of the puzzles can be very hard despite the game giving you an unlimited number of attempts. If you do become really stuck however, you can opt for a limited amount of hints whenever you want but these will cost Hint Medals. Hint Medals are scattered throughout every area and as with traditional Western adventure games, there’s a good deal of pixel hunting to be done if you want to find these hidden medals. Medals aren’t the only thing you’ll find hidden in scenery as some puzzles have to be found too.
