Most HD Game Resolutions Not Even 720p Let Alone 1080p

11.15.07

I like this post!

Well it turns out that when a game box says that it runs in 720p or 1080p it’s not entirely true. Sure you can set it to that resolution but the actual game output resolution is rarely exactly that.

Check out two of the biggest releases of the season for example:

COD4 (360) 1024×600p 2xAA
COD4 (PS3) 1024×600p 2xAA
Uncharted (PS3) 960×1080 in 1080p

Neither Call of Duty 4 or Uncharted run in the actual resolutions.

The reason most games do this is to allow for more visual effects to be rendered to the screen without slowing the game down. Most won’t ever notice or care but it’s kind of interesting to find out the actual resolutions that games render in. Here are some more recent ones along with a huge list of older releases from the pixel counter at Beyond3D.

Def Jam: Icon (PS3) 1152×648
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (PS3) 1920×1080 FullHD
Transformers (PS3) 960×1080
Pirates of the Caribbean (PS3 720p): 960×720
Pirates of the Caribbean (PS3 1080p): 780×1080
Oblivion (360): 1024×600 (PS3 version is full 720p)
ICO (PS2): 512×224p (less than Tekken on PS1 at 512×240)
VF5 (PS3 720p): 1024×1024 (same as 360)
VF5 (PS3 1080p): 1024×768

  1. I have been somewhat suspicious of that for a while now, read something stating closely to this in an article on line a while back.. But I wonder if the vga that I have on my 360 makes any difference?I can adjust the res. to all sorts of settings..But again, it could be just upscaling, sort of like the default for the games anyhow..But I will have to say that if my 360 is playing call of duty 4 at that resolution as stated..It looks damn good..My set up is a panasonic 1280P native projector on a 10×6 screen..Just hard to believe that the res is that with the detailing ,even AA would give it sort of a washed look I would think at that res when upscaling.. From a pc perspective, Higher res with no AA would be the solution for the ps3’s games and hope it’s capable of the frame rates at higher res..And the 360’s AA with lower res should still keep frames way up for any new games that maybe coming out.. I do remember cod2 for the 360 really did not look nowhere near that of the pc’s version set at the same res..I compared the two games when the xbox 360 came out and decided to not get it at that time due to the comparison..Hmm, wonder what res it was playing on the 360? But really cod4 is like candyland on my big screen so I guess it really doesn’t matter too much.. : 0)

  2. This is the case because often its difficult to optimize a game to run smooth and be able to actively render at that high of a resolution, some games can do it, but games where a lot is going on, like CoD 4 it becomes difficult for developers to really get there game to run that high of resolution

  3. That’s not going to be a problem - most TVs aren’t using their native resolution either.

  4. Who cares as long as the games still look good? Yeah you’re missing a few hundred pixels, but honestly the majority of people who would be complaining about this are the ones who didn’t realize until they read this article.

  5. Just goes to show all the console fans out there that when it comes to raw gaming power, nothing can come close to the PC right now. I game at 1920×1200@60+FPS with much richer content than will be available on any console in the near future. Will it catch up? Maybe. Are they close now? Not even in the same league.

  6. I love it. Now all those people crying how much better 1080p looks over 720p or even Nintendo Wii’s 480p have to eat their words. The resolutions aren’t the numbers they like to pretend they are. Dumbasses.

  7. I was under the impression that HD resolutions only deal with horizontal resolution. Therefore, if a game, such as Uncharted has a horizontal resoution of 1080, it is a true 1080P game. The ones that don’t match the HD resoltions aren’t though.

  9. What a waste, having all of that HD realestate and not using it 100%.

  10. 960×1080 is high definition through a process called Wobulation in DLP televisions which doubles the horizontal resolution from 960 to 1920X1080 or high definition. It is true that they will prey on the public’s lack of understanding of what high definition really means. To actually create a game in full 1080p without seriously taxing the hardware or ruining the game is a technical achievement that we shouldn’t really expect but should consider ourselves lucky to see.

  11. What is with some of the messed up aspect ratios?
For example: VF5 (PS3 720p): 1024×1024. Thatslightly more megapixels than standard 1280×720 yet because of scaling there would be less useful pixels produced! That makes no sense! They’re lowering performance AND lower visual quality!

  12. It’s interesting to point out & be educated but the numbers just don’t matter, it’s the overall end result. I look at this & I don’t feel cheated in any way.

  13. What happend to the RB6 port for the PS3? Why do the graphics look like crap if you play it at 1080p?

You have to set the resolution to 720P to make the game look good.

RB6 for the PS3 is a great example of a game lying and saying that it runs at 1080P.

I do get tired of having to set my resolution at different settings for different games.

  14. What does the “AA” and “2x” mean?

    Comment by bobo — November 16, 2007 @ 11:28 am

  15. I guess it makes sense that GRAW 2 and Bioshock are the best looking games on the 360. They are the only ones actually running ‘true’ HD of 1280 x 720 with 2x AA. So those that say that resolutoin does not matter, do you thinkg it is a coincidence that these 2 games look the best, and they just happen to be the only ones that actually run at the proper resolution? Why do you think you see so many jaggies when you play Halo 3? It’s because of the 640p instead of 720p. The lower resolution means that corners, railings, fences, etc will be jaggy as opposed to smooth and breathtaking, like they are in GRAW2 and BIOSHOCK

  16. Resolutions are measured in horizontal lines, but are actually only pertinent to the corresponding vertical line count. Therefore, when the actual video of something is say…1280×688 it is still 720. The extra space is then made up for by either stretching or adding black bars to the top/bottom.

  17. Just one more reason PC gaming is still and always will be the best for the hardcore. I’ve been gaming in “Hi-Def” for years before the 360 came out.

  19. Anything with a vertical resolution (height) of 1080, whether in “i” or “p” is considered as “FullHD” by Sony’s standards. Take a look at a lot of their Cybershot cameras with TV out and their HD Handycams. I have a FullHD sticker on my Cybershot H9 that outputs at 1080i. I’ve even seen a “FullHD” sticker on a Sony Handycam, which according to its manual, has a resolution of 1440×1080i in the highest settings!

This is how far the term “FullHD” is stretched. Thankfully, I haven’t seen anyone else except Sony doing this… probably because it’s their own buzz word.

As I write this, here in Australia, almost all the latest 360 releases have 1080p as a supported resolution on the back of their covers. The same games on the PS3 only have 720p marked. For example, Sega Rally Revo and many others.

If you ask the manufacturers, they’ll say they do the lower-res rendering to make the performance consistent and do the upscaling (to common resolutions) to make sure aspect ratios are consistent on all TVs.

  22. I can see why they say that.
But how can they compare them to say pc games and such.
But in a sense I cant see how they tested the output of them.
Will just have to wait until we hear of bigger webpages stating this is true.
Cant go by one webpage saying this!
So on the later note. I say this is untrue!
