Playstation 2 Is The Best Selling Console Ever

The PS2 just turned seven and reached a mind boggling 120m consoles sold and with all this fanfare it seems everyone has failed to realize this makes it the best selling console ever. According to Wikipedia the only close contender is the Gameboy/Color which comes in at a respectable 118.69 million but that’s only if you count the two handhelds together.

Gamebiz throws out a whole bunch of other interesting numbers including the fact that the PS2 has helped sell over a billion software units and the top ten sellers of all time are:

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (12 million)
Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
Gran Turismo 4 (8.79 million)
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million)
Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (3.7 million)
Final Fantasy XII (3.68 million)

And 5 of those titles are in the top 20 sellers of all time.

It’s truly an insane accomplishment that’s only future rival seems to be the DS and the Wii.
