Square Enix’s Anata Mo DS de Classic Kiite Mimasen Ka? (Wouldn’t You Like To Listen To Some Classical Music On DS?) is the latest in a line of personal-betterment products that promise Japanese consumers more intelligence and cultural savvy via the miracle of technology. It’s a tempting proposition. Who wouldn’t want to be more erudite? To become a Renaissance person in just minutes a day? Can the Nintendo DS do that? Uh, actually it probably can. Only caveat: you have to understand Japanese, at least right now. This is a bit more of a barrier for me than I’d like to admit; as I’m sitting there reading about classical music, all I can think is that I’m back in school facing the hardest Japanese test ever and it breaks the mood.
