Playstation 3 Update Brings Edy Support - Import PSN Purchases Easier?
01.23.07

Japan really doesn’t like credit cards for some reason so around 2002 they started using Edy cards.
From Wikipedia:
“Edy provided by bitWallet, Inc. in Japan is a prepaid rechargeable contactless smart card. It uses Sony’s FeliCa technology, also used by the competing Suica cards by JR East. While both cards can be used at participating stores, vending machines, and websites, Suica is the only contactless card that works with JR’s ticket gates. While the name derives from euro, dollar, and yen, it works with yen only.”
With the 1.50 update you can now use an Edy card reader via the PS3’s usb slots and transfer money to your PSN account. This means that if you have a way to get an Edy card you can then buy things off of the Japanese PSN store if you live outside Japan! No word on wether or not this will work on US or UK PS3’s but we’ll be sure to try it out as soon as we can.
